Alice Matthews - Posted April 12, 2007 A Marked Increase The number of calls to which the FD responded has seen a marked increase. From Dec. 1, 2006 to April 10, 2007, the FD has responded to 104 calls, quite an increase since our total from Dec. 1, 2005 to Nov. 30, 2006 was 165 calls. Alice Matthews - Posted April 12, 2007 Our 75th Year 2007 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Bay Volunteer Fire Department. To help mark this special anniversary, the fire department and fire district plan to work together to keep residents informed of department and district happenings, with the help of the Queen Central News. 2006 was a busy and successful year for the North Bay Fire Dept. and Fire District. 2007 has started much the same way. Taxpayers have noticed on their 2007 Town and County tax bills, increases in all taxes except North Bay Fire District taxes. Once again the Board of Fire Commissioners has created a budget with no increase in taxes, while continuing to maintain and update fire fighting and emergency medical equipment. In addition, North Bay’s fire fighters and emergency medical personnel continue to keep up with current procedures by attending any and all classes available to them. The fire commissioners support the department members in these efforts, and even attend some of the courses themselves. In 2006, North Bay Fire Department responded to 165 calls, both within the district and mutual aid responses to our neighbors. These departments work hand-in-hand with North Bay to protect lives and properties within our region. In January 2007, North Bay responded to 26 calls. Over the past four years, the department has applied for several grants. Funds were received and used to purchase turnout gear, a thermal imaging camera, a portable pump, wildland fire fighting tools, and air packs. The grant writing efforts, along with managing the funding responsibly, have helped to keep that 0% tax increase, in spite of cost increases, particularly in the area of fuel and utilities. North Bay Fire Department has once again begun their Friday Fish Fries. This has been a lucrative fund-raiser for the department, thanks to the support of everyone who enjoys the dinners. The fall of 2006 also saw the beginning of a website for the fire department. The website address is: www.northbayvfd.com. Thanks to volunteer webmaster, North Bay Fire District resident Bob Lisenko. This is a new effort and is still in the growing stages. The heavy snowfall this winter has created a problem keeping fire hydrants accessible. The fire department asks for your help in two ways. First, if there is a hydrant near your home, please help by shoveling the snow away from it. Secondly, the fire department would like to purchase hydrant markers. If you would like to make a donation to help out with that, it would be greatly appreciated. Don’t forget to check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors often. Be safe.
